Introduction to the Study Permit

Each year, over 135,000 international students choose Canada as their destination for higher education. To study in Canada, students must obtain a study permit issued by the Canadian government. This permit, classified as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows temporary study in the country and specifies the educational institution and program. Meeting the eligibility criteria is crucial for obtaining this permit.

Eligibility for a Study Permit

To qualify for a study permit, applicants must meet specific requirements set by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

  1. Acceptance by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI):
Obtain a letter of acceptance from a Canadian DLI approved for international students by the provincial or territorial government.
  2. Intention to Leave Canada:
Demonstrate to an immigration officer your intention to leave Canada upon the permit’s expiration.
  3. Financial Proof:
Provide evidence of financial capacity to:

    • Pay tuition fees.
    • Support yourself and accompanying family members during your stay.
    • Afford return tickets for you and your family after your permit expires.
  4. Clean Legal Record:
Maintain a clear criminal history and abide by Canadian laws.
  5. Medical Health:
Be in good health and undergo required medical examinations if requested.
  6. General Admissibility:
    Meet Canada’s general entry requirements.
  7. Quebec Studies:
For those studying in Quebec, secure a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ).

Once granted a study permit, eligible family members can join you in Canada by obtaining their own study or work permits.
